Embarking on a journey from the captivating town of Salleri, nestled amidst picturesque hills and adorned with breathtaking mountain vistas, we set off on a jeep ride towards the enchanting destination of Bupsadanda. Our expedition commences by traversing through the lively Salleri Bazaar, where a tapestry of shops, hotels, and the district administration breathe life into the bustling streets. Venturing further, our path leads us to Phaplu, where trekkers flock from Kathmandu, eagerly preparing for their odyssey to the revered Everest Base Camp. Along the way, our eyes are greeted by the splendid sight of monasteries gracing each village, their vibrant Buddhist prayer flags dancing in the wind, adorning every dwelling. The prevailing spirit here resonates with the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism, embraced by the majority of the local populace.
The trail meanders through the charming Sherpa and Rai settlements, traversing terraced rice fields and weaving through serene alpine forests, until we reach the idyllic destination of Rigmo. Ascending to Trakshindu La at an elevation of 3,071 meters, we descend gently to Nunthala, also known as Mani Dingma, situated at 2,320 meters. As we continue our expedition, the road gracefully descends to the Dudhkoshi River Bridge, a tranquil spot nestled at an altitude of 1,510 meters, marking the lowest point of our exhilarating trek. Surrounded by verdant forests, our journey presses forward, unveiling the Rai village of Jubing as we navigate around a scenic ridge. Our final destination of the day is the charming village of Khari Khola, embraced by nature’s beauty. The culmination of our day’s adventure brings us to the serene hamlet of Bupsa, located at an elevation of 2,300 meters, where we find respite and tranquility.
While the drive from Salleri to Bupsa spans a duration of approximately 5 to 6 hours, our quest continues on foot towards the inviting village of Puiyan, also known as Chutok, standing proudly at 2,730 meters. As we ascend through the dense jungle, our senses are captivated by the wonders of nature. Crossing the Kari La pass at an altitude of 3,145 meters, our ascent is punctuated by moments of awe-inspiring beauty, lasting between 40 minutes to one hour. Finally, we find solace in Puiyan, nestled amidst the embrace of nature’s splendor, where we shall rest for the night, rejuvenating our spirits for the adventures that lie ahead.

It was within these humble surroundings that Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, an emblem of courage and determination, first saw the light of day on the 10th of December in the year 1961, in the serene village of Sukre. Her indomitable spirit would later propel her to become the first Nepalese woman to conquer the summit of Mount Everest on the historic date of 22nd April 1993.
Continuing our journey, the trail meanders northward, unveiling a sprawling, scattered village adorned with fertile lands. This picturesque expanse leads us to Chaurikharka, a place where spirituality and education converge. Nestled within its embrace, we find a monastery that exudes an aura of tranquility, serving as a beacon of spiritual devotion. In the vicinity, a high school stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to knowledge and growth. Chaurikharka, situated at an elevation of 2,694 meters, has earned the moniker of the “bread basket” of the Khumbu region. Its bountiful fields yield ample harvests of barley, wheat, and vibrant green vegetables, providing sustenance for the land and its inhabitants.
Pressing forward on our ascent, the trail unfurls before us, tracing a path high above the gushing Dudh Koshi River. Passing through Chhipling and Ghat, we eventually arrive at the serene haven of Phakding, situated at an altitude of 2,610 meters. Along this leg of our expedition, the presence of fellow trekkers becomes more pronounced, as we encounter a steady stream of adventurers embarking on their journey to and from the Everest Base Camp. The air is filled with a palpable sense of camaraderie, with trekkers, porters, and the gentle giants of the Himalayas, the yaks, harmoniously sharing the trail. It is within the embrace of Phakding that we find solace, settling in for a well-deserved overnight stay, ready to embrace the wonders that await us on this remarkable expedition.

Setting forth, the trail unfolds along the meandering banks of the Dudh Koshi River, guiding us through the enchanting hamlets of Tok Tok and Benkar, nestled at an elevation of 2,630 meters. Along this picturesque route, our senses are treated to a symphony of wonders, with the majestic peak of Mt. Thamserku adorning the skyline, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of nature’s canvas.
Today’s journey is characterized by an intimate dance with the Dudh Koshi River, as we find ourselves crossing its glistening waters a total of five times. Each suspension bridge traversed brings us closer to the secrets that await us in the heart of the Himalayas. Ascending from the last bridge, our path leads us to the tranquil Sherpa settlement of Chhamuwa, where an agricultural project farm stands as a testament to the community’s endeavors. From here, our ascent continues, guiding us to the picturesque village of Monjo, perched at an elevation of 2,840 meters. It is here that our guide undertakes the necessary task of checking in all the permits at the entrance gate of Sagarmatha National Park, a sanctuary spanning an expansive area of 1,148 square kilometers, its establishment dating back to the year 1976.
Descending once more, we find ourselves embraced by the soothing ambiance of Jorsale, having crossed yet another bridge over the Dudh Koshi River. A short walk through a serene pine forest leads us to another bridge, and with renewed determination, we continue our ascent along the river’s right bank. The trail rewards us with panoramic vistas as we traverse steep inclines, eventually arriving at the fifth and final bridge. Here, amidst the confluence of the mighty Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi Rivers, high above their rushing waters, a moment of awe befalls us. From this vantage point, the crown jewel of the world, Mt. Everest, standing tall at 8,848 meters, and its majestic companion, Nuptse, boasting an elevation of 7,879 meters, grace our view for the very first time on this extraordinary trek.
Pressing onward through the ancient forests that adorn the national park, we venture forth for a duration of 5 to 6 hours. Our footsteps echo in harmony with the whispers of the wilderness, guiding us inexorably towards the fabled trading hub of Namche Bazaar. This historic rendezvous, steeped in tradition and commerce, welcomes us with open arms. Nestled amidst nature’s embrace, we find solace in Namche Bazaar, where we shall seek rest for the night, basking in the tranquility bestowed upon us by the majestic mountains that surround this haven of enchantment.

After a leisurely breakfast, our spirits renewed, we embark on a captivating day hike that leads us to the illustrious Everest View Hotel and the charming Khumjung Village.
The trail winds its way up the hill, offering panoramic vistas that leave us breathless. Snow-capped peaks glisten in the sunlight, casting a spell of enchantment upon the landscape. As we traverse the path, we pass by the Syangboche Airport, a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the local community. Our steps lead us to the Everest View Hotel, a place where dreams merge with reality. Here, we are treated to an ideal vantage point, offering awe-inspiring views of the world’s highest peak, Mt. Everest, standing tall at an impressive 8,848 meters. The grandeur of Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Kangtegha, Thamserku, Kusum Khanguru, Khongde, and Khumbi Yu La unfolds before our eyes, creating a symphony of majestic beauty that lingers in our souls.
Descending from this ethereal haven, we find ourselves immersed in the captivating embrace of the Khumjung Valley. Its verdant landscapes and charming Sherpa dwellings with their distinctive green rooftops create a picture-perfect setting. Situated at an elevation of 3,780 meters, Khumjung reveals its treasures. The historic Hillary School, a century-old Monastery with a mythical yeti skull, and the esteemed Khunde Hospital stand as testaments to the resilience and spirit of the local Sherpa community. We soak in the serenity of this remarkable village before retracing our steps, passing by a Yak farm and the Syangboche Airport, as we make our way back to Namche Bazaar.
For those with an insatiable curiosity, Namche Bazaar has more to offer. The Sherpa museum beckons, inviting us to delve deeper into the rich cultural heritage of the region. A visit to the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) and the head office of Sagarmatha National Park provides a deeper understanding of the efforts undertaken to preserve the fragile ecosystem of this extraordinary region. If our timing aligns with fate, a Saturday visit rewards us with the vibrant and bustling weekly markets, where a kaleidoscope of commodities awaits us at the southern edge of town.
As the day draws to a close, we find solace in the welcoming embrace of a cozy tea house, where we shall spend the night, cherishing the memories and wonders that have unfolded during this captivating day of exploration in Namche Bazaar.

Ascending the ridge that looms above the town, we find ourselves drawn towards the nearby museum, a sanctuary of knowledge and cultural treasures. As we traverse the pleasant trail that meanders through the forest, a captivating sight unfolds before our eyes: the majestic Dudh Koshi River flows gracefully below, while the towering peaks of the Himalayas paint a breathtaking tableau on the horizon.
Our footsteps guide us towards Kenjoma, where the trails converge, intertwining the stories of trekkers journeying from Khumjung, Gokyo, and beyond. Together, we embark on a gentle descent, a symphony of anticipation and wonder resonating in our hearts. The trail leads us to the small settlement of Sanasa, where the scent of adventure lingers in the air. Here, we begin our descent towards the Dudh Koshi River, our faithful companion on this odyssey, until we arrive at the tranquil haven of Phunki Thanga, nestled at an elevation of 3,250 meters. It is here, in this picturesque locale, that we pause for a moment, relishing a well-deserved lunch before commencing the two-hour ascent to the pinnacle of the ridge, where Tengboche Monastery stands in all its resplendent glory.
Perched majestically at an elevation of 3,867 meters, Tengboche unveils a vista that defies description. The world’s highest peak, Mt. Everest, takes center stage, commanding our attention with its towering presence. As our gaze sweeps across the panorama, we are treated to a grand symphony of mountains: Kwangde, Tawachee, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Kantega, and Thamserku. Each peak contributes its own unique melody to this captivating composition, leaving us in a state of awe and reverence. In this ethereal setting, we find solace and serenity, as if time itself has paused to behold the magnificence of nature’s masterpiece.
As the day wanes, we seek refuge in a cozy tea house, where we shall spend the night, surrounded by the echoes of the mountains and the whispered tales of the ancient monastery. Tengboche, with its unparalleled vistas and spiritual aura, invites us to immerse ourselves in its embrace, igniting a sense of wonder that will linger in our souls long after we have departed.

As the sun rises and breakfast is served, the journey continues down from Tengboche, through the vibrant rhododendron and pine forest, where mossy trees line the path. The scenery is breathtaking, and the air is crisp and fresh. As we approach Deboche at an altitude of 3,820m, the forest gives way to a more open terrain, and the trail continues to follow the Imza River. From here, we cross the bridge over the roaring Imja Khola River, and the trail climbs steeply to the ancient Chorten and gate that is adorned with Buddhist decorations. As we ascend, the views of the snow-capped mountains are incredible, and the towering Mt. Ama Dablam is particularly impressive.
Next, we continue our journey upwards to Pangboche village at an elevation of 3,930m, passing through the small settlement of Milinga. The scenery remains stunning as we cross the riverbank, hike through Somare (4,010m) and Orsho, and enter the arid and barren landscape at Warsa. Here, we take the right trail to Dingboche and the left trail leading to Pheriche Village (4,240m).
As we cross the Lobuche River, the trail steeply ascends to the hill’s ridge, where we will see cairns and Buddhist Chortens adorned with prayer flags. From here, the path leads us through the wider Imza Valley, where we will start to see tea houses and farms as we approach Dingboche (4,410m). The village sits just beneath the awe-inspiring view of Mt Ama Dablam, providing an unforgettable experience.
We will be spending the night at a tea house, where we can rest and take in the beautiful surroundings before continuing on our trek. The journey so far has been an adventure full of breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable experiences, and we look forward to what lies ahead.

As we fuel up with breakfast, our journey towards Lobuche begins. The trail takes a steep ascent towards the ridge of the hill above Dingboche. Following the same route from the Chorten, we hike along the ridge towards Nangkartshang Peak (5,615m) with an awe-inspiring view of Tabuche (6,367m) and Cholatse (6,335m). We head northwest, passing through the summer pasture huts and taking in the breathtaking mountain views. The trail leads us higher above Pheriche Village and towards Duglha (4,620m) after crossing the Lobuche Khola, which drains from the Khumbu Glacier a few hundred meters above.
For the next 45 minutes, we embark on a steep ascent towards the Duglha Pass (4,830m), where we encounter numerous stone memorials and cairns dedicated to the climbers who lost their lives during expeditions. Our trail continues north, alongside the glacier, providing us with magnificent views of Nuptse (7,861m), Pumori (7,165m), and Lobuche Peak (6,145m). After an hour’s ascent from the memorial area, we reach Lobuche Village (4,910m), where the effects of altitude start to become apparent, and the colder nights become more apparent. We’ll be spending the night at a tea house to rest and rejuvenate for the next day’s adventure.

Today is a day that many have been looking forward to – the journey to the Everest Base Camp! The day begins with an exciting trek from Lobuche, ascending gently towards the Khumbu Glacier. The landscape is barren and arid, with loose rocks scattered along the way. You’ll pass by a notice board for the Lobuche Pyramid, a scientific observatory located at the Top of the World by the Italian government since 1990, at an elevation of 5,050m. It’s just a short 15 to 20-minute walk from Lobuche.
The trek continues towards Gorak Shep (5,140m) with many ups and downs via Lobuche Pass (5,110m), through the glacier. The triangular shape of Nuptse (7,861m) and Mt. Pumori (7,165m) are a common sight along the way. After three to four hours of walking from Lobuche, you’ll reach the last tea house before the Everest Base Camp, which is located at the highest elevation in the world. The stunning views of the Everest Base Camp and the Khumbu Glacier can be seen from the ridge of the glacier before Gorak Shep.
At the tea house, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch and prepare for the adventure trek towards the Everest Base Camp. Make sure you have enough drinking water, warm clothes, some energy bars, trekking poles, and a headlamp. The trek goes along the ridge of the Khumbu Glacier, with several ups and downs on loose rocks. It’s a strenuous walk due to the high altitude and thin air, passing over rocky dunes, moraine, and streams until you reach the Everest Base Camp (5,360m) after a 2 to 3 hours walk.
During the spring season, the base camp can feel like a mini Thamel with most of the amenities. As this is your dream destination, take your time to enjoy the experience at the Everest Base Camp with the Khumbu Glacier, Khumbu Icefall, Glacier Lake, and the wonderful surrounding atmosphere. After spending ample time at the base camp, trek back to Gorak Shep for the overnight stay, enjoying the tea house located at the highest place in the world. It will be a night to remember!

Today marks the pinnacle of our trek as we visit the much-awaited viewpoint of Kalapatthar. As we sip on hot tea and soup in the early morning, we prepare ourselves for the challenging climb ahead. The two-hour ascent to Kalapatthar promises a 360-degree view of the majestic mountain peaks, leaving us awestruck and mesmerized.
At the outset, the trail steeply ascends for the first 15 minutes towards the south-north corner of Gorak Shep, before leading us upwards to the plateau. This very plateau holds historical significance, as the Government of Nepal held a cabinet meeting here in December 2009, drawing attention to the world about the dire effects of global warming on the Himalayan region. We continue our struggle through the ascending trail, battling the thin air, and finally reach the summit of Kalapatthar (5,550m).
As we bask in the glory of this moment, our eyes feast on the breathtaking views from the top of the peak. Kalapatthar bestows beyond imagination views, making us forget all the exertion of the climb. Our dream has finally come true, as we witness the Everest Base Camp down below on the moraine of Khumbu Glacier, along with other awe-inspiring mountainous scenery such as Pumari (7,145m), Lingtren (6,695m), Khumbutse (6,623m), Changtse (7,550m), Nupse (7,879m), and the mighty Everest (8,848m) itself.
After immersing ourselves in the splendor of Kalapatthar, we descend to Gorak Shep and retrace our steps towards Pheriche via Lobuche. With Nature’s tranquility surrounding us, we spend the night at Pheriche, still reeling from the magnificent sights and sounds that we’ve experienced on this trip.

As we bid farewell to the serene town of Pheriche, we make our way down to lower altitudes, and it feels as if the air has become lighter and easier to breathe. We follow the tranquil Imza Khola river, and the peaceful sound of the flowing water accompanies us along the way. We pass through the charming village of Pangbuche, where we take a brief ascend towards Tengbuche. Tengbuche is renowned for being one of the largest monasteries in the region and offers breathtaking views of Everest, Mt. Lhotse, and Lhotse Shar, as well as ample views of Mt. Ama Dablam.
We continue our journey as the trail gradually descends through the lush forest, teeming with pine, juniper, and rhododendron trees, with occasional magnolia and birch trees adding to the picturesque scenery. As we cross the suspension bridge over the glistening Dudh Koshi River at Phunke Tegna, we feel the refreshing breeze and the warmth of the sun on our faces. We ascend onwards through the charming villages of Sanasa and Kenjuma, en route to the bustling town of Namche Bazaar, where we will be spending the night.
As we settle in for the night, we reflect on the incredible journey so far, and the unforgettable sights and experiences we have encountered. We look forward to the remaining days of our trek, knowing that there is still so much more beauty and adventure to discover.

As our adventure in the Khumbu region comes to an end, we make our way back to Lukla, our last destination. The trail takes us on a scenic route through lush forests and across suspension bridges over the confluence of the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi Rivers. The trek is filled with the hustle and bustle of other trekkers, porters, and yaks, but the natural beauty surrounding us is breathtaking. We pass through charming Sherpa villages such as Jorsale, Manjo, Benkar, Tok Tok, Phakding, and Ghat, where we see Buddhist chortens, mane walls, and spinning prayer wheels. It’s a poignant reminder of the culture and spirituality that underpins life in this region. As we walk along the riverbank, we know that this is our last day of trekking, and we take in the landscape with a mix of joy and sadness. After a 6 to 7 hours walk from Namche Bazaar, we arrive at our final destination, Lukla. Here, we have some time to explore and wander around before settling down for the night. Our guide takes care of confirming our flight tickets, and we celebrate our last dinner with the crew, reminiscing about the memories we have made together. It’s a bittersweet moment, knowing that our trek has come to an end, but feeling grateful for the incredible experiences we’ve had in the Khumbu region.

As our adventure in the breathtaking mountains of Nepal draws to a close, we make our way back to Kathmandu from Lukla. We must rise early to catch our flight, as the weather can be unpredictable in the afternoon, causing delays or cancellations. While we hope for smooth skies and a timely arrival, it is always best to plan for contingencies, so we suggest keeping an extra day in your itinerary just in case. However, with a bit of luck, we will make it to Kathmandu as planned, where we bid farewell to our guides and fellow trekkers. The remainder of the day is yours to spend as you wish, perhaps reflecting on the incredible journey you have just experienced or exploring the vibrant streets and markets of the city. We will spend the night at the hotel, taking in the last moments of our unforgettable adventure.
