Overview

Mera Peak is located in the Khumbu region of Everest, Nepal. It is a trekking peak of 6476m high, this Climbing peak is a technical climb and is considered the highest trekking peak in Nepal. Mera peak has been one of the top climbing destinations for the mountain community.

Mera Peak is located in the Barun Subsection of the Himalayas. There are three main summits for the Mera Peak. Mera North, Mera Central, and Mera south.

Mera Peak Climbing History

The expedition exploration first happened by the British expedition team in the early 1950s. The member who climbed this Trekking Peak first was Sir Edmund Hillary, Tenjin Norgay, George Lowe, and Eric Shipton.

Mera Central was first summited by James Owen Merion Roberts. He is also called as  “father of Trekking”. He was heavily involved in establishing the Trekking industry in Nepal.

Mera North was first climbed by the french exploration team Marcel Jolly, G.Baus, and L.Honnils on 29 October 1973.

Mera Peak Climbing Routes

From the north side, it is a glacier walk and the west and south offer a few technical routes. From the top summit of the Mera peak, 5 of the 8000m peaks are visible clearly that is Mount. Everest(8848.48m), the third highest peak Mount.Kanchenjunga(8586m), 4th highest peak Lhotse(8516m), 5th highest peak Mt. Makalu(8485m), and 6th highest peak Mount.Cho Oyu(8201m).

All the climbers are requested to take some training before ascending this peak.

Mera Peak Climbing Difficulty

Throughout the Mera Peak Climbing Trip, there will be lots of ups and downs, passing through a lot of valleys, narrow ridges, difficult terrain, high altitude, freezing cold, and crossing glaciers. All these combined increases the difficulty of Mera Peak Climbing.

Climbing any Peaks that are above 6000m is not an easy thing to do. You will need lots of exercises, physical fitness, willpower, and equipment to do it. Even though you have everything prepared perfectly there might still be some issue with the Climbing and that is the weather. Weather sometimes becomes bad and makes the trip more difficult. Whenever the weather becomes bad in the mountain, the chances of a snowstorm, strong winds, avalanches, and landslides increase. So need to be really careful while doing this trip. Listen to the expert while you are on the trip. Eating, drinking, walking speed everything should be carefully done.

The trek distance including climbing Mera peak is about 125 kilometers in total so it’s a lot. With that high altitude walking even 1 kilometer is pretty hard. Most of the time you will feel that you are out of your breath. But don’t worry and go slowly.

Climbing season of Mera Peak(Best time to climb Mera Peak)

There is two trekking and Climbing season in a year in Nepal. Autumn and Spring are the best time to Climb Mera Peak. Generally, in these seasons the weather becomes soft with day sunlight and night moderately cold. There won’t be lots of snow covering the area at this time. Neither monsoon nor winter, so it is an amazing time especially for Climbing any peak higher than 6000m.

Autumn Season is the longest trekking season starting from Mid-September to Late December while Spring starts in March and ends in May.

Mera Peak Climbing in Autumn Season(September to December)

Autumn Season in Nepal Starts in mid-September and ends in Late December. A huge number of people visit Nepal during this particular period of time. The climbing season is also in Autumn. For Trekkers and Climbers, it is the best season. And coming to Mera Peak is an amazing time. You will feel Lucky if you are here in Nepal in Autumn as the weather is very clear with a blue sky. The snow-capped Mountain visible from the Top of Mera Peak is stunning. At night the twinkling star is so nice to see and that kind of view is not seen anywhere in the world.

Weather in Mera Peak Climb

The weather situation in Mera Peak is always changing it is very hard to say when will be good and when will be bad weather. It is never very warm in the Mera Peak region. The lowest temperature in the region will be in January and the highest temperature in July, and August( above 0 degrees Celcius).

You will be able to experience different weather conditions throughout your trip. The weather from Kathmandu to Mera Peak top will be vastly different.

The climate in the Mera Peak region

There is three climatic zone accordingly to our itinerary: Sub-Alpine, Alpine, and Artic. These climatic are categorized by the weather, temperature, plants and vegetation, and Flora. So you will be able to experience different Climatic zone while doing Mera Peak Trip. Altitude Sickness and its prevention while on the Mera Peak Climbing Trip

Climbing Mountain means you are going to a high altitude and high-risk area. It is not as easy as talking. One of the main risks of the height at that meter is that people will generally get sick. Due to the high altitude and low oxygen level, most of the time body can’t handle it.  If the body can’t handle the environment of the Mountain then high-altitude sickness happens. Our Mera Peak Itinerary is designed in such a way that you will acclimatize. We have 2 rest days and it will help you a lot in getting used to the Mountain and its Climate.

High Altitude sickness prevention while on Mera Peak

It is normal to get high altitude sickness while climbing Mera Peak. There are a few things you should consider for Mera Peak Climbing so that you can prevent high altitude sickness:

  • Make sure that you have enough gear and climbing materials.
  • Drink enough water (purification tablets are recommended).
  • Eat well (foods with high calories are recommended).
  • Travel with a Guide is the best way to prevent problems that you might face in the Mountains.
  • Diamox consumption at that worst case.

Can Children and older people do Mera Peak Climbing?

The Mera Peak Climbing is very much designed for Fit people, it doesn’t mean that Children and older people are not fit or physically strong. Children and old people might not like these kinds of high altitude climbing adventures and also ethnically it doesn’t suit them and there is a high risk too. Travel Away doesn’t recommend this trip for Older people, Children, or those with medical conditions who are not suited to do this Trip.

Modes of Transportation before and after the Mera Peak Trek

Either a Private or sharing bus to Ramechhap is arranged by Travel Away Trek. All the Transportation from Kathmandu to Ramechhap is in well-maintained condition with comfortable seats. Similarly, Ramechhap to Kathmandu Transportation is also the same as Kathmandu to Ramechhap Transportation.

Small STOL twin otter aircraft will be booked for you to the Lukla and similar flights back to the Ramechhap. The total number of seats on each flight would be around 20.

Permits required for Mera Peak Climbing Trip

A registered Trekking agency in Nepal is eligible to issue Climbing Permits for Mera Peak. Besides this, you first require to pay 250USD for Garbage deposits. There is no group discount for Mera Peak Climbing. Climbing Permit costs around 250USD per person. Apart from a Climbing permit, you need an extra Local Permit, Sagarmatha National Park Permit, and Makalu Barun National Park permit.

Day 1: Kathmandu Arrival

Later, you will be briefed about the Trip.

Day 2: Kathmandu to Manthali Ramechhap

Today earlier in the Morning, you will depart to the Ramechhap Manthali for a night stay in the Manthali nearby Airport.

Kathmandu to Ramechhap is about 4.5 hours drive.

Day 3: Ramechhap to Lukla(2800m) flight and then Trek to Chhutang

Today is your trek start day but first, fly to Lukla. The flight to Lukla is a scenic flight. It is around 15 minutes flight from Ramechhap, Manthali Airport.

After reaching Lukla, You will take a local permit. Our Guide will do that for you. And then start your Hike towards Chhutang. Chhutang is east of Lukla, you need several permits on the way as you will pass from several restricted villages.

Walking through the Pine and Rhododenrop thick forest along the black mountain ridge encountering lots of connected trails which might be confusing. You will finally reach Chhutang.

Note: This trail is less crowded and confusing so don’t get too away from your Guide.

Day 4: Chhutang to Tuli Kharka via Zatrawala pass

After a fresh morning breakfast, your will start today’s journey towards Tuli Kharka which is at 4600m.

Starting today you need lots of strength as it will be more challenging. You will gain more altitude today. A lot of effort and willpower is required to reach on top of the Zatrawala Pass. After reaching on top of Zatrawala, you will descend for about 2 hours to reach Tuli Kharka via Chattre.

Day 5: Rest Day

Today the trail will take you to the Hinku Valley of the Khumbu Region. Today there are lots of uphill and downhill.

After reaching Hinku Valley, you will have your first view of Mera Peak. The trails over there won’t be that easy so make it a slow walk.

From the Hinku River of the Hinku valley, there is an uphill climb till you reach Kothe

Day 6: Kothe to Thagnak

As usual Morning breakfast and depart till the destination walk. Today’s Journey is till Thangnak and Our Mera Peak Climbing journey is coming near every day.

You will again walk alongside the Hinku River. The river will guide you to Gondishung where you will have your Day Lunch. There is one of the oldest Buddhist Gomba of the Khumbu in Gondishung (Lungsumgba Gomba).

After then an easy and beautiful trail until you reach Thagnak.

Day 7: Thagnak to Khare

Today as usual Morning breakfast at the tea house and move towards Khare. It is a bit harder day as you have to move through the Steep Mountain Terrains.

Walking through Hinku Nap and Shar Glacier won’t be an easy walk. After crossing the glacier a very steep walk to the Khare.

Day 8: Acclimatization at Khare

Before Heading for Mera Peak Climb, you need an extra day for Climbing preparation and rest.
At this high altitude, it is obvious that you might get altitude sickness or any altitude-related difficulties such as Dizziness, High pulse, Headache, and so on.

Day 9: Khare to Mera Base Camp

In the morning you will depart towards the Mera Peak Base Camp. The way to the Mera Peak Base Camp will be a difficult way through the Mera Glacier.

After crossing the glacier top soon after you will reach Mera Peak Base Camp. You will meet your Sherpa Guide at the Base Camp. Your Camp and food equipment will be unpacked there.

Day 10: Mera Peak Base Camp to High Camp

In the morning you will ascend towards the High Camp. The route from Base Camp connects the Mera La Glacier. Even after the Pass the trail still is ascending until you reach Mera High Camp.

From Mera High Camp some of the Breathtaking mountain peaks are clearly visible. So enjoy staying at Mera High Camp.

Day 11: Summit Mera Peak and back to Khare

10-12 hours

Waking up at 2 am in the morning you will start your summit journey. With all of the equipment gearing up you will start Summit Push.

2 am is a better departure time as you also need to get back to the Khare on the same day Timing is a really important thing during this summit as in the daytime there will be strong winds.

It’s normal having this achievement of Summit. So after reaching Khare you can celebrate your Mountain Summit.

Day 12: Khare to Kothe

Trek Duration :

5-6 Hours

Today you will pass through Thagnak before reaching Khare. The route today is easier and downhill till you reach Kothe.

Day 13: Kothe to Tuli Kharka

Trek Duration :

5-6 Hours

Today it is more uphill than downhill. It is around 5-6 hours until you reach Tuli Kharka.

Day 14: Tuli Kharka to Lukla via Zatrawala Pass

Trek Duration :

7-8 Hours

Earlier in the Morning after having breakfast you will start your journey for the Lukla which is the final destination of your Trek.

To reach Lukla you again need to do Zatrawala Pass.

Day 15: Lukla to Kathmandu via Ramechhap

Morning flight back to Ramechhap Manthali and then you will take a car back to Kathmandu.

How will we pay for the Trip?
For the trip payment, a certain percentage must be deposited in order to secure the seats and then you need. You can contact the Travel Away Team on how to send money, and make the transfer to Travel Away's stated bank address.
Can we Take our pet to this trip?
No, the National Park won't allow you to take pets to these mountain as it is not safe for pet animal at these kinds of environment.
What is the cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel the trip or postpone the trip then you will need to contact Travel Away 30 days prior to departure. If you are canceling the trip then a certain percentage will be deducted from the total amount.
Does Tipping and Summit Bonus included in the Package cost?
Tipping for Guide, Porter, Climbing Guide, Climbing Porter is not included in the Trip. Normally for a Trekking Guide: 20 percent of the Total cost of the Trip should be given. For Porters 10 percent of the Total cost For Climbing Guide 20 percent of the total cost, the summit bonus is extra, and for the climbing porter 5-10 percent of the total cost.
