The Manaslu Expedition presents a unique blend of natural beauty and technical challenge, making it a coveted goal for seasoned mountaineers. Nestled in the remote Gorkha region of Nepal, Mount Manaslu’s towering presence amidst the rugged landscape offers a sense of isolation and tranquility. The journey begins with a trek through picturesque villages, dense forests, and terraced fields, providing a cultural immersion into the traditional Himalayan way of life.
As climbers ascend, they encounter diverse terrains, from steep ice slopes to knife-edge ridges, testing their skills and endurance. The expedition demands careful planning and strategic acclimatization, with climbers establishing multiple camps at increasing altitudes. The views from these camps are breathtaking, revealing a panorama of neighboring peaks like Ganesh Himal and Himalchuli. The pristine beauty of the region, coupled with the physical and mental challenges, creates an unparalleled adventure for those daring enough to undertake the Manaslu Expedition.
Moreover, the Manaslu region is renowned for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems. Climbers may spot elusive wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard, Himalayan tahr, and various species of pheasants. This expedition not only offers an adrenaline-pumping ascent but also an opportunity to appreciate the fragile mountain environment. As climbers forge ahead, they contribute to the conservation efforts in the area, promoting responsible and sustainable exploration of these awe-inspiring heights. The Manaslu Expedition, with its blend of natural wonders and physical demands, stands as a testament to the allure and challenges of high-altitude mountaineering in the heart of the Himalayas.
Embark on the historical journey of Mt. Manaslu, a once formidable challenge transformed into an accessible adventure. Witness the legacy of the first all-female Japanese expedition in 1956, marking a pioneering ascent above 8000m. Today, our Travel Away Treks and Expeditions offer a unique blend of tradition and modern convenience, shortening the expedition to 6 weeks with optional helicopter transfers.
What was once considered perilous has evolved into a less technical feat during the autumn season, thanks to professional rope fixing and trail-making services by the Expedition Operators Association (EOA). Travel Away Treks and Expedition, a proud EOA member, ensures a comfortable climb, with fixed Departure Snowy Manaslu Expeditions each autumn. For spring, we recommend this adventure for seasoned climbers, preserving the essence of challenge for those seeking a more extraordinary ascent.
Discover Mt. Manaslu’s ascent through distinct camps, each marking a crucial step in the expedition. Camp 1 (C1) at 5,500m sets the stage, introducing climbers to the challenges ahead. As you ascend to Camp 2 (C2) at 6,300m, the terrain becomes steeper, demanding heightened alpine skills.
Progress further to Camp 3 (C3) at 6,700m, where the climb intensifies with glacier crossings and intricate snow steps. This leg of the journey requires a solid grasp of basic alpine climbing techniques. Finally, reach the pinnacle at Camp 4 (C4), positioned at 7,300m. The air is thin, and the objective avalanche risk looms, underscoring the technical demands of the summit push.
While Manaslu has seen Alpine-style climbs, the norm for commercial operators, including our Expedition Operators Association (EOA)-affiliated Travel Away Treks and Expeditions, is the expedition style. This strategic choice enhances the chances of summit success, aligning with the commitment to providing a secure and successful climbing experience for our clients.
On a journey that transcends time as you trek into the mesmerizing base camp of Manaslu, reminiscent of an era when the Himalayas were reached solely on foot. Choose from two distinctive routes, each offering a captivating expedition experience.
Option one commences from Dharapani in the Manang district, following a two-day drive from Kathmandu via Besishahar. As you gradually ascend to Larkya La pass at 5216m, the restricted trekking area unfolds. Descending to Samagaon, considered the pre-base camp, via Dharamshala and Samdo, you swiftly approach the Advance Base Camp (ABC) in a single day. Opting for the Samagaon-Arughat route on the return completes the Manaslu circuit trek, allowing for acclimatization before reaching base camp.
Alternatively, the second option starts at the low elevation of 950m in Soti Khola via Arughat. After a 6/7-hour drive from Kathmandu, the trek gradually ascends over seven days, traversing narrow gorges, rhododendron forests, and local pastures. From the quaint village of Soti Khola, immersed in the low country, the journey unfolds through breathtaking landscapes, culminating in the higher alpine terrain influenced by Tibetan culture.
The Advanced Base Camp (ABC) at 4800m rests on the lateral moraine of the Manaslu Glacier, accessible through a 7-8 day trek. Alternatively, experience the extraordinary by flying into Samagaon or ABC via helicopters from Kathmandu, fulfilling your advanced demands and adding a touch of unique flair to your expedition.
