Annapurna Circuit Trek Altitude

Annapurna Circuit Trek Altitude Chart

Annapurna Circuit Trek is among Nepal’s best adventure and one that is particularly known for its scenic and diverse landscapes. Among the best challenge and attraction offered by the trek is how the altitude changes so dramatically along the route of the trek. From low-lying settlement town Besisahar at around 760 meters, trekkers ascend gradually through forest, rice and maize fields, and traditional settlements incrementally adding elevation day by day. The trek offers an excellent experience of seeing both the subtropical and alpine regimes within a week or so of walking.

The trekkers reach the area of Dharapani (1,860m) and Chame (2,610m), where the air is cooler and the terrain begins to change. As they continue to Pisang (3,300m) and Manang (3,540m), they are deep within the domain of Annapurna, and snow-crowned giants are all around. The climbing to a high elevation requires acclimatising carefully, and many trekkers spend an extra day at Manang acclimatising to the thinner air. This section is vital to avoid altitude sickness, which can catch even seasoned hikers if they ascend too quickly.

The track continues its steady climb to Yak Kharka (4,050m), and Thorong Phedi (4,525m), where trekkers prepare for the ultimate challenge: the Thorong La Pass crossing. At an elevation of dizzying 5,416 meters, Thorong La is the high point of the Annapurna Circuit Trek and one of the world’s highest high-altitude mountain passes. The pass is challenging to access, with rarefied air and subzero temperatures, but the sense of triumph and the reward of Himalaya panorama views makes it all worthwhile.

The elevation falls steeply from Thorong La Pass to Muktinath (3,760m), which is a sacred pilgrimage town. It is dry and desert-like again since the trek now enters the Mustang district. From Muktinath, there is the descent to the bustling town of Jomsom (2,720m), the end of the old-style Annapurna Circuit Trek for the majority of tourists. The steep elevation drop on the downhill is kind to the lungs but challenging to the knees!

On the whole, the height profile of the Annapurna Circuit gives a traditional Himalaya experience, from low-altitude valleys to one of the world’s highest non-technical mountain passes. The high elevation acquired is perfect for acclimatising naturally and allows trekkers to experience the changing landscapes and cultures at a relaxed pace. Slow and steady progress, advance planning, and respect for the high altitude are the keys to completing the Annapurna Circuit Trek safely, enjoyably, and memorably
